Top Takeaway:

Find our ‘work’ then do it daily and the results will come.

Overview

This is the second book in my creativity series here in the Takeaways and it’s all about dealing with creative blocks.

And boy, does the author deal it out!

This book is absolutely a kick in the seat of the pants, calling us readers our on how we get in our own way when it comes to creativity.

I love it! I love his direct approach. It always helps me feel so much more empowered whenever I dig back into it.

It’s a small book with short ‘chapters’ so it can almost be used as a daily devotional. But be warned, it’s not one of those soft, kind, positive devotionals. This one will light a different kind of fire!

Mr. Pressfield writes from his experiences as a novelist and screenplay writer, but this book is for all of us, as he describes in these passages from the introduction:

Late at night have you experienced a vision of the person you might become, the work you could accomplish, the realized being you were meant to be? Are you a writer who doesn’t write, a painter who doesn’t paint, an entrepreneur who never starts a venture? The you know what Resistance is.

Resistance is the most toxic force on the planet. It is the root of more unhappiness than poverty, disease, and erectile dysfunction. To yield to Resistance deforms our spirit. It stunts us and makes us less that we are and were born to be.

Wow, Pretty powerful stuff right there.

So my big takeaway from The War of Art is to find the work we can’t help but do, then do it daily, do it for the work itself. The Muse, The Universe, The Creator – however you identify the source of your gifts – will see your work and reward you for using them, for practicing.

Whatever your art or work is, check out this book to win the war against Resistance, to be that being you’re realized to be and let me know what your top takeaways are!
